Finger Cymbal Workshop with Karim Nagi

I got to attend Karim Nagi's Sagat (Zills if you're Turkish) Dance workshop. I've wanted to improve my sagat playing as it's such an important part of Belly Dance. It's a true instrument and being able to play while dancing takes a lot of skill and is spectacular to watch.

We learned the 'Dum' and 'Tak' sounds as well as the (new for me) 'Tik' and 'Tok' which was great fun I also learned how to drum roll for shimmies which was easier than I thought as you make the sound by holding your Sagats down with one edge lightly touching and making fast circles with your wrist.

Then we listened to the music we'd be dancing to and Karim did the most amazing air guitar demonstrating every featured instrument in the song and which parts are played by the orchestra which is the only part you should be playing on and never during the taksim (which is an improvisation of a solo instrument such as a violin, guitar, keyboard, accordion etc..) as the composer features it for a reason and you playing finger cymbals on top of it will detract from the music.

We then took a break from the sagats and learned dance steps to the music. It was the first time I learned a Belly Dance routine from a guy before and he was a fantastic teacher, had great style and flair and gave me lots of new ideas for improv moves I hadn't explored before, which is exactly what you want to take away from a choreography. Then to make it even more complicated we added in all the new sagat rhythms we learned and coordinated them with the movements.

On top of a great day I got a shiny new set of sagats which Senta brought me back from Egypt. Yay! I already sewed the elastic on and got the bright idea from Astrid to sew a bead on either the middle finger or thumb cymbals so you can quickly see which is which when you have to put them on mid show. Smarty pants.

Here's a clip of a Sagat solo which is something I want to master one day. :)

Weekend Dancing...

We've done so many Bollywood shows lately it was nice to have a weekend of all Belly Dance just to make sure I keep my groove on.

First off, HUGE news, my good friend Ioanna just won runner up in the Miss Belly Dance SA competition yesterday! Well done and I'm not surprised! You can see her featuring in our Oriental Fire Extravaganza Belly Dance Shows video clip as the lovely dancer with the sword and Isis Wings. You go girl!!

Last night I first performed for a Mehndi night show which ran into every technical difficulty you could imagine but the ladies were so awesome we had a great time anyway.

I then flew (which, if you're a traffic cop, means safely at the speed limit) 150km to another show at a brilliant Greek Evening (complete with Zorba and breaking plates) and a group of little girls about 6 and 7 years old all came and danced with me afterwards. Way too cute.

Today, I'm off to perform as a groom's surprise for his bride at a wedding reception... fun fun!

Here are the 15 Johannesburg Finalists. There are 66 finalists from all 3 cities and they'll have another selection process and online voting. It looks like a long process so I intend to fully enjoy it. :)

Shows and Stuff...

Such an awesome few weekends of shows. First was an amazing corporate function at Emerald Casino organised by Fluid Media with Toni Gozza Music and the absolutely incredible Chester Missing and Conrach Koch ventriloquist comedian! The show went fantastic even though I initially got the wrong venue and we had to fly to make it there!! (I would call it the worst blonde moment EVER but I'm not blonde so have to call it a serious brain cloud. Gulp.)

On Saturday we performed for a 40th birthday party for Kamlesh organized by his beautiful wife Shekha. The dress code was black and white with a touch of red and everyone down to the kids looked so stylish! We ushered in the couple and did a Bollywood show and after speeches and other performances a Belly Dance show. I love completely switching between styles and hopefully do them both justice which I think we managed! :) The wife called me this morning to say we were all anyone talked about and that they loved it and they hope to have us perform again soon. Yay us!!

I love working with these girls. :)

We had to fly off to a Bollywood themed evening at TSG, a big restaurant/venue which was in a shopping centre that just had a major robbery and shoot out about 30 minutes before we got there! Thankfully, there were no casualties and the cops, paramedics and detectives were out en masse. Our job was to cheer up the crowd of mainly families after a rather traumatizing experience. We performed our Bollywood medleys which turned out to be a big hit with the kids all gathering around the stage and some of the little girls trying to copy the moves which was adorable! Life is certainly an adventure.
