We've recently added Sega Dancing to our repertoire which is the traditional dance of Mauritius. It's a very simple but beautiful dance built mainly around their very full skirts. It's like one of those outfits you'd dream of wearing as a little girl, I used to call it a 'fly-out skirt' and this is definitely as good as it gets.
I love the chilled out island music as well, definitely something you'd love to hear on a hot summer's day while drinking a cocktail in your hammock on the beach. ;)
My daughter took some pics of me in costume but I can't wait to take some group shots... coming soon. :)
My inspiration right now is one of the most graceful dancers I've seen; Bozenka. I love her long, luxurious poses, gorgeous posture and perfect arms. She glides around the stage and most importantly, keeps your attention, something I always judge a dancer by.
Something about her movements have to be captivating and enchanting. Her dance, unpredictable, while at the same time not look like a heap of surprises or steps that don't belong, it has to flow, the dance has to make the music come alive, perhaps bring out something in the music that you hadn't noticed or focused on before.
A balance of playfulness, seductiveness, grace and beauty. All things woman.
"When I dance, the sun sails safely through the night; When I dance, the future is formed by my feet; When I dance, the stars move through the heavens; When I dance, Venus shimmers the desert; When I dance, dust becomes silver, stones are made of gold!" — Cosi Fabian
It's back to work for me but as they say 'it's not work when you love it.'
I'm working on choreographing new medleys for our own show we're putting on at the Civic Theatre! More details coming soon but I love having artistic license to build on a long term dream of mine. :) I'm a very happy puppy (as my mom would say).
This video from a proudly South African Belly Dance teacher Sanet Halck (Haddiyah) in Atlanta was such an inspiration to me and showed the potential of what a dance school can be in it's community. Just beautiful.
